Ricerca di Sistema (RdS)

La Ricerca di Sistema (RdS) is the instrument by which MASE finances research activity for innovation in the Italian energy sector. CNR, ENEA and RSE represent the three research groups financed by the MASE to carry out projects considered strategic for the growth of our country. Electrochemical and thermal storage technologies play a fundamental role in the massive introduction of renewable energy sources for accelerating the decarbonization and energy efficiency process. Two of the most important projects on the topic of energy storage in Italy are currently underway, financed by MASE through program agreements (AdP) and competitive tenders (BANDO A); these are known as “Integrated Project 1.2 Electrochemical and Thermal Storage Technologies” and “Organics for Green Electrochemical Energy Storage” - ORANGEES. The first one, P1.2 is aimed at research activities related to the study of materials for frontier technologies such as low-temperature molten sodium, metal-ion (Al, Mg, Zn, etc.) or new-generation lithium-ion Gen 3 and Gen 4 (TRL2), up to TRL 3-5 topics, related to sodium-ion batteries, vanadium flow batteries (VRFB), as well as the optimization of materials for lithium-ion. Similarly, thermal storage is aimed at both the optimization of materials and systems to improve energy efficiency (TRL4-6). The aim is to identify sustainable, innovative and easily available materials in order to reduce the storage technologies costs for improving the competitiveness. In the ORANGEES project, research activity is aimed at the development of hybrid (inorganic and organic) and purely organic materials, both of natural origin and from process waste, for new-generation electrochemical storage systems. The activity concerns materials that are still little or not at all explored and looks in the long term at the integration and/or potential replacement of inorganic materials commonly used within current AE technologies. This is a low TRL (1-3) research activity that aims to validate materials both from the point of view of electrochemical performance and environmental sustainability, through a scouting, synthesis and characterization activity of the same.
