Consuelo Alvarez-Galvan completed her Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Sciences and her Master’s thesis before being awarded a fellowship to pursue her Ph.D. at the University of La Laguna, Tenerife, which she defended in 2000. Her doctoral research focused on the development of catalysts based on natural zeolites for pentane isomerization. In 2001, she moved to the Institute of Catalysis and Petrochemistry (CSIC) in Madrid.

Her research has been dedicated to the development of heterogeneous materials and catalysts related to environmental protection and energy production. The processes she has investigated include the removal of volatile organic compounds, catalytic hydrogen production from hydrocarbons and water, hydrogen generation from H₂O through thermochemical cycles, conversion of biomass waste into fuels, catalytic CO₂ reduction processes such as syngas production by the catalytic reduction of CO₂ with hydrogen or methane and the direct synthesis of dimethyl carbonate, as well as the development of new materials—alternatives to silicon—as absorbers for solar cells based on perovskites.
